Sugar Reef Bequia Beach Hotel FAQ

What is Sugar Reef Bequia?
Sugar Reef Bequia is a boutique hotel and restaurant with a private beach on a historic coconut plantation. Our guests enjoy the rustic splendor of a traditional haute Caribbean lifestyle; to determine if this lifestyle is for you, take our "Go or No Test."

Where is Bequia? How do we get there?
Bequia is a small island in the country of St. Vincent & the Grenadines in the Caribbean. Visitors arrive via yacht, ferry or small plane. Our international hotel guests generally fly to Barbados or another Caribbean hub, then fly either to Bequia or to St. Vincent, from which they take a ferry to Bequia. See “How to Get to Bequia.”

What time of year is best to visit?
Sugar Reef Bequia is open year round and Bequia's weather is always beautiful. The Old Year’s Night fireworks, late January music fest, and Easter regatta are annual highlights. (See Bequia Tourism for details of special events.)

What are your nightly room rates?
Sugar Reef Bequia's room rates range from $150 to $300 USD in high season (Christmas through Easter) and from $120 to $240 USD the rest of the year. We offer discounts for stays of seven or more nights when you book via this website. To check rates and availability, click on Book Now at the top right of this page.

May we bring our kids?
The hotel is for adults (18 and over) only. Children are welcome at Sugar Reef Cafe.

Where are Sugar Reef's bar and restaurant?
Sugar Reef Cafe is at our Beach House. See "Cafe" and our restaurant TripAdvisor reviews. (Sorry, no room service.)

What else is at the Beach House?
The Beach House also has lounging areas in the great hall with a selection of board games. Outside, Adirondack chairs and chaises longues dot a grassy area along the beach. Our three beachfront rooms are also at the Beach House.

Where are the Beach House rooms? Do they have privacy? Is there any difference between them?
The Beach House's guest wing is off a courtyard near the restaurant and great hall. The three rooms have thick stone walls and each has a small private patio; they share a private seaside garden with hammocks and lounges. The Beach House rooms are all very similar.

What is at French House?
French House is a hillside greathouse built on the foundations of an 18th century French plantation house. It has five guest rooms, an enormous wrap-around veranda, a great room, and a courtyard with a saline plunge pool--providing among them many places to relax. The great room has a selection of books, puzzles, and games.

How do we get from French House to the restaurant and beach?
You may walk or use our shuttle service between French House and the Beach House. Many of our guests enjoy the long, sloping walk down the private drive through the estate to the beach--about half a mile.

If we stay at French House, may we eat there?
We serve continental breakfast daily on the veranda at French House and stock an honor bar in the great room. French House guests may also cook for themselves in French House's old-fashioned Caribbean kitchen. (Sorry, the restaurant does not deliver meals to French House.)

How big is the pool? May Beach House guests use the pool?
The pool is 7 feet by 15 feet. It is for French House guests' exclusive use.

Do the rooms have air conditioning?
No. Our windward side of Bequia is cooled by trade winds year-round. All Sugar Reef Bequia's rooms have lots of ventilation and mosquito nets over the beds. The beachfront rooms have ceiling fans. In addition, standing fans are available upon request.

Is smoking permitted?
There is no smoking indoors. Smoking is permitted outdoors, including on the verandas.

Is the beach swimmable?
Absolutely. The bay is protected by a reef and the water is calm and swimmable. There is good drift snorkeling from the next bay.

Does Sugar Reef Bequia have sports equipment?
The guest equipment room at the Beach House has a kayak, bikes, bocce, badminton, and snorkeling equipment for use by all hotel guests.

May I run/walk/hike nearby?
Yes. There is excellent running and walking on the estate and along the road at our end of Bequia, where it is exceptionally peaceful and unspoiled. There is also a half-day “ramble” through the forest to Bequia Head. We recommend you hire a guide for long off-road hikes. For information on hiking and other island activities in Bequia, see "Things to Do."

Is there a spa?
We can arrange in-room massages, manicures and pedicures, and hair care by experienced local massage therapists and aestheticians.

Are there other restaurants nearby?
There are many good restaurants on Bequia within a couple of miles of Sugar Reef. For details, see "Things to Do."

Are there taxis?
Yes, there are many taxis in Bequia--usually converted pickups with benches and an awning over the truck bed. They charge 30 EC ($11.50 USD) to or from Port Elizabeth, two miles away.

Do we need a car? Where can we rent one?
No, you don’t need a car. Many guests spend most of their visit at Sugar Reef or within walking or biking distance, occasionally taking taxis to explore the island. Guests who want to be out and about frequently enjoy the freedom of having a car, and can rent one. Let us know, and we will arrange for an SUV and a local driver’s license through one of several small, local rental companies.
